Fantasy Island Model Railroad Layout with Cogwheel Railway or Rack Railway in O Gauge

Imagine there would be a small island, somewhere in the world's seas. And, on this island a cogwheel railway or a rack railway is driving from the port, down in the valley, up to train station on the mountain. In the harbor a passenger ship rocks in the waves, and on the other side of the island a fishing port is located. On the sea, there are a submarine and a lighthouse. This is the whole model railway layout, based on 3 x 3 feet, that was built by Thomas Schmid from Switzerland. He named his absolutely amazing display in the French words Île VaOù, and his model train layout was awarded with several prizes, for example at the famous model train exhibit Ontraxs in the Spoorwegmuseum at Utrecht, Netherlands. Please, enjoy the little railway climbing the hills along bridges, along rock faces and along deep fissures in the mountains.

Behind the scenes at Mr. Porsche ‘s Model Railway Museum

Behind the scenes at Mr. Porsche ‘s Model Railway Museum

Many viewers asked Pilentum if there is a video recording in which you can look behind the scenes, for example looking into the fiddle yard or staging yard. And, the answer is yes. Pilentum made a cab ride from the Austrian model trains section to the Swiss model trains section. Therefore, the camera model train had to cross the big railway bridge. After crossing this bridge the camera loco is riding along the impressive fiddle yards or staging yards behind the scenes. These model railway tracks are hidden from view and allow trains to be stored by the operator. Please, enjoy the railroad landscape and railway scenery.

Cab ride on a model railroad display with Marklin and Kiss and KM1 steam trains

This beautiful model railroad layout belongs to a railway fan from Germany. He started construction in 2006. On this layout, there are two levels: The upper level represents a little village with a railway station, with a marshalling yard and with a round house for steam locomotives. The lower level contains a large fiddle yard. The whole layout is built in 1 gauge. Gauge 1, 1 scale or gauge one is a model railroading and toy train standard that was popular in the early 20th century, particularly with European manufacturers. Gauge one was standardized at 1:32 scale. Today, 1 gauge experiences a renaissance, first in the UK and then elsewhere. This was helped by 1 gauge being the same size as the modern G scale, a popular standard for outdoor model railroads.

The Great Munich Model Railway Museum

The Great Munich Model Railway Museum

For more than 30 years, the Munich Model Railway Museum has been one of the largest miniature and model railway exhibitions in Germany. Originally, the HO gauge layout was designed in 1978, and opened in 1980. At first, the layout was growing up to almost 400 square meters. More and more attractions were added to the model railroad system, such as a fairground or the simulation of aircrafts at the miniature airport. In 2008, the entire model railway layout and its electronics were renewed: The model railway control was converted from analogue to digital operation by DCC format. On the whole, the rolling stock consists of locomotives, coaches, and trains of all eras in order to offer a great variety of railway traffic and railway history to visitors. There are old German steam locomotives as well as modern high speed trains, such as Intercity, Railjet and Intercity Express.

Model Railroad Layout with Steam Locomotive Depot in World War II

Model Railroad Layout with Steam Locomotive Depot in World War II

This model railway layout in HO gauge was made by Maciej Lukaszewicz from Poland. His layout is representing the old steam train and steam locomotive depot in Białogard, the most important railroad junction of the Middle Pomerania. Białogard became part of the German Empire in 1871. After World War II, it became part of Poland. The model railway layout presents the historic railway era, including the genuine Reichsbahn atmosphere around the year 1930. Then, the locomotive depot was located in Eastern Pomerania. Born in Poland, the model builder Maciej Lukaszewicz decided to build a German layout because he has got a detailed and excellent knowledge of technical German railway history. So the “Steam Locomotive Depot in World War II” is a very fine example of model making handicraft, including historic locomotives and rolling stock. There are perfectly modelled engine sheds, service buildings, and the large turntable. The size of the model railway layout is about 5.0 meters x 2.0 meters.

The new Faller Car System Digital with Satellites for Automatic Vehicle Location

The new Faller Car System Digital with Satellites for Automatic Vehicle Location

During the great model railway exhibition in Cologne, Germany, Pilentum Television had taken some video records from the new car system made by Faller. The famous Faller car system was updated to a digitally controlled system. Therefore, it is called “Faller Car System Digital”, now. The system offers a higher degree of reliability as well as a high degree of individual road traffic on the model railway layout or model street layout. Ultrasonic signals which are exchanged between the cars and the satellites, accurately determine the position of each vehicle. It is an automatic vehicle location for scale model cars. The software behind the system running on a computer calculates values for the car’s distance control. There is a fully automatic control for high traffic on the street layout, now. Similar to track plans at model train layouts, you can generate road maps with the miniature car system by Faller. Please, take a look at the computer display at 1:20 in this video file. The software at the computer display is presenting all information and settings clearly and graphically. The small model cars and the system are in permanent contact via a radio link. Via the radio link, each car receives driving commands and reports information, such as the state of charge or the current driving stage, back to the system. With this wireless connection, any function’s change is possible during driving. Unfortunately, the satellites, which are used for vehicle identification and for vehicle location, must be installed over the model railway layout. And, depending on the size of the layout, at least three satellites are required for fully automatic operation. Furthermore, it is a disadvantage, all the vehicles have a black radio and satellite sensor integrated on their roof, which does not look really nice. There are other car systems, like the DC-Car system (Germany) or the MCC ModelCarParts system (Netherlands), which appear to be more advantageous for true model building. Nevertheless, such a car system makes a lot of fun.

British Model Railway Layout Ladeside Diesel Depot in O Gauge

British Model Railway Layout Ladeside Diesel Depot in O Gauge

At the international model train exhibit in Cologne, Germany, Mike Bisset and John Donaldson presented their famous model railway layout, called Ladeside Diesel Depot. The model railroad system was built in O gauge or O scale, and it depicts a diesel locomotive depot in the early 1960s of British Railways. Then, diesel locomotives were starting to take over from the old steam trains. The brand new locos could often be seen standing side by side with steam engines in dirty rundown steam depots. The authorities soon discovered that these old steam sheds were not the ideal environment for the maintenance of diesel locomotives and they decided to convert the former steam sheds to provide basic servicing and fueling facilities for the diesels. The model train layout of “Ladeside Diesel Depot” is typical of such conversions. The layout is based on the former steam shed at Ardrossan in the south-west of Scotland. The railroad system is DCC wired and all diesel locomotives are fitted with sound decoders, some even have smoke generators. Some steam locomotives are also in evidence, and they are also fitted with sound decoders and smoke generators. The size of the model railway layout is about 7.0 meters x 2.0 meters.
